Rebuilding the Path to Graduation: Alternative Education in South Carolina

Some days, I’m reminded that many of my Graduation Candidates (GCs) have already been overlooked by the traditional school system—told, directly or indirectly, that they’ve fallen too far behind. At Lowcountry Acceleration Academy, that narrative changes. As a Social Studies Content Coach, my classroom isn’t defined by rows of desks or rigid pacing guides. Instead, it’s built on relationships, flexibility, and the belief that every student—no matter their past—can still reach the finish line.

Start of the Day: Building Connection
Each day begins with connection. As Graduation Candidates (GCs) arrive and check in, I greet them and ask how they’re doing. This simple moment helps set the tone and ensures they feel seen. We then talk through their goals for the day, identifying which assignments they need to complete to continue progressing toward graduation. For many GCs, having a clear and manageable plan helps reduce the overwhelm they often experienced in traditional school settings.

Mid-Morning: Monitoring & Supporting
As GCs begin working, I circulate to observe progress and offer individualized guidance where needed. If I notice a change in a GC’s demeanor—such as being quieter than usual or appearing distracted—I take time to connect briefly with them individually. These moments allow students to share what may be weighing on them, helping them refocus and re-engage. In this environment, responding to students as people comes first.

Late Morning to Early Afternoon: Collaborative Support
Support throughout the day extends beyond just me. Our GCs are surrounded by a dedicated team of Content Coaches, Graduation Candidate Advocates (GCAs), and Graduation Candidate Retention Advocates (GCRAs). Together, we conduct regular touchpoints to monitor progress and provide targeted, individualized support. At times, we bring students together in small learning groups to break down lessons and activities, helping them build deeper understanding and turn confusion into clarity.

Afternoon: Deepening Understanding & Momentum
As the day continues, I work closely with GCs through both individual and small-group instruction. This time is focused on reinforcing concepts, building confidence, and encouraging persistence. Whether it’s helping a student push through a challenging assignment or celebrating progress, the goal is always to keep them maintaining forward progress toward graduation.

End of the Day: Reflection & Planning
At the end of the day, GCs check out and reflect on whether they met their goals. If they didn’t, we don’t frame it as failure but as an opportunity to learn. We talk through any challenges—whether academic or personal—and create a plan for their next visit. This ensures they leave knowing they have support and a clear path forward.

What makes this work meaningful is the strong sense of community. GCs know they have a team invested in their success, which helps them rebuild confidence and remain committed to their goals. This environment fosters accountability, encouragement, and a belief that success is still within reach.

Here, that success is measured in more than completed assignments. It’s reflected in the small but powerful victories—a student refocusing after a tough start, asking for help instead of shutting down, or staying a little longer to finish what they began. These moments represent true transformation. At Lowcountry Acceleration Academy, we don’t just help students earn diplomas—we help them rediscover their potential.

This journey has shaped me as much as it has shaped them. At Acceleration Academies, I’ve grown from working in transportation, to a Graduation Candidate Advocate (GCA), to a Graduation Candidate Retention Advocate (GCRA), and now to a Content Coach. This model didn’t just change how I teach—it deepened my purpose. It pushed me to do more, be more, and show up differently for students who need it most. And in doing that, they inspire me just as much as I hope to inspire them every single day.
