Some days make it clear why this work matters. Our recent Capitol Day was one of them.
We came in with a straightforward goal: bring the voices of South Carolina’s charter school community directly to the people shaping policy. That’s exactly what happened.
School leaders, board members, advocates, and students came from across the state, ready to share what’s working and where support is needed. The conversations were direct and productive, focused on real issues like funding, transportation, and staffing, and what it takes to meet students where they are.
The most impactful voices, as always, were the students. They spoke plainly about their experiences, why their schools matter, the opportunities they’ve had, and what they’re working toward. That perspective is hard to ignore and even harder to forget.
Throughout the day, we met with key state leaders, including the Lt. Governor, the Chairs of the Senate and House Education Committees, the Speaker of the House, and lawmakers from across the state. These conversations were thoughtful, respectful, and centered on solutions.
Capitol Day isn’t just about making a case, it’s about making connections. It’s an opportunity to reinforce that charter schools are part of the public education system, serving thousands of South Carolina students and families, and that they need policies that support their success.
One day at the Statehouse doesn’t solve everything. But it moves the conversation forward.
What matters now is keeping that momentum, continuing to share these stories, strengthen relationships, and stay focused on what’s best for students.
If you were there, thank you for being part of it. If not, there’s still a role for you. This work continues well beyond a single day.
